Protecting Social Security
Keeping Our Promises

Picture
The support provided by Social Security to both seniors and families with children who lose a parent is a promise we must keep. Social Security has been one of the most successful social programs we have ever had in the United States, allowing seniors to live with the dignity they deserve...

Women's Health
Supporting Women's Choices

Picture
As a healthcare provider I have spent countless hours listening to women and supporting their choices about their own health and the health of their families. Choices about reproducing are personal and should be left to women and their healthcare providers. Women must have easy access to contraception so they can decide if and when they wish to bear children.

The Economy, Jobs, & Taxes
Working for the Middle Class

Picture
If we are to remain a great nation, our economy must support a large and secure middle class.  I will work for full employment and decent wages for all Americans.

In Support of Marriage
...For All Who Wish to Participate

Picture
John and I have been married for 23 years and our marriage is a source of joy and comfort for both of us. Marriage is good not only for individuals but for children and society as a whole. Married couples tend to be more stable and resilient and can offer two parents to children. Therefore, marriage is an institution that should ideally be available to all couples who wish to participate.

The Environment and Energy
Decreasing Reliance on Fossil Fuels

Picture
Earth is the only home we have. We must protect and preserve its finite resources so that our grandchildren and their grandchildren can experience this beautiful place we call North Carolina. Our reliance on fossil fuels is causing irreversible damage to our planet, and cannot be sustained. We must develop economical ways to utilize clean, renewable sources of energy, and we must do it now.

Second Amendment
Balancing the Rights of Individuals with the Need for Public Safety

Picture
The second amendment is dear to us in the Fifth district. Many of us use guns for hunting, sport and self-protection. But gun violence, particularly that done with rapid-fire weapons, has made it impossible to ignore the need to balance rights of individuals with the need of public safety. We must respond to the call by national law enforcement organizations, who have asked for immediate action by citizens, law enforcement and elected officials alike to address the “crisis of gun violence” in our society.

Medicare
Security and Peace of Mind for Seniors

Picture
I believe we must preserve Medicare to protect seniors who have worked hard and have earned security and peace of mind. Medicare is a successful government program that prevents millions of seniors from living in poverty. In Washington, I will support policies that protect Medicare.

Financial Security for Seniors
Facilitating Financial Planning and Retirement Savings

Americans who have worked hard and contributed to their communities deserve to live their later years with dignity and peace of mind. We must protect our seniors by preserving Social Security and Medicare. We must promote and facilitate financial planning and retirement savings. In Congress, I will support policies which ensure livable wages that allow families to not only make ends meet, but also to save retirement. I will also support tax policies that benefit the middle class and low-income workers so that families can keep – and save – more of what they earn.
